Artist Statement

What’s haps with the snaps? My name is Christopher Spicer and I’m a graphic designer and aspiring character artist.

The reason I make art is so I have a way of expressing my inner thoughts, feelings, and deep hyper fixations that I can’t shake from my head. Often a lot of mainstream media fails to satisfy my uber specific wants and needs, but with my art I can take those great ideas, and concepts, and form a wholly new piece that covers every base my heart could ever desire, from queer rep, to musical, and mythological media/storytelling. My art is about me and every little chaotic thought that pops in my head.

My main craft is making pleasing digital designs and illustrations, with my primary medium being adobe indesign and illustrator and most of all Procreate.

The way I go about the process of character art and graphic art is by switching back and forth from laptop to iPad, software to software, graphic design to character design to eventually make designs from both artistic genres that I can be proud of.

who the he11 am I?

My name is Christopher Spicer and I’m a graphic designer in the state of Casper, Wyoming however I was born in Salt lake, Utah and raised in Rawlins, Wyoming which is where I ended up graduating from. When I came to Casper I graduated with an associates degree in graphic design. While at college I had many of my personal works selected for a position in the college’s local magazine and overall created some of my best pieces while enrolled at the college, from Illustrations to graphic designs.

Why graphic design? Since I was young I had a passion for art (go figure) which obviously translated into a love for drawing. From preschool all the way to this very day, I have been drawing with both pencil and paper or a tablet. My interest for graphic design didn’t come until way later, senior year of highschool in fact, but after seeing the opportunities I could find myself in with the world of graphic design, while still utilizing some of my illustrated tactics and techniques, the career choice became too hard to pass up. I wasn’t great at it at first mainly due to me wanting to be too much of an illustrator and not a designer, however after I learned the lesson that not all designs can be artful, but instead all designs need to communicate a message some can do that while being but not all of the time. Once I learned that lesson, graphic design clicked more and I found an even deeper passion with graphic design, and even began to appreciate other designs in the same way I admired art as a kid.

Overall I hope to use my career to marry the gap between the two forms and create a style that is uniquely me, and is something that I and many others can be proud of and awestruck by.
